21st October – late season forage
On Monday 21st October we led a late season foraging walk and jam making workshop from a base in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. This was part of a project by artist Lucy Harrison and academic Efstathia Kostopoulou that explored the history of the industries that used to be found in the area – including the Clarnico sweet and jam factory.
Despite being late in the season we were delighted to find the Greenway to the south of the park still full of fruit! Rosehips, hawthorn and sloes were our main pickings, with a few last blackberries as well.
By the end of the afternoon we had transformed our pickings into a delicious mixed jelly (we added some apples for pectin that I picked on my way to the workshop in Hackney, E8). We named our creation Greenway jelly – and everyone took a jar home.
